Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has voiced his concerns about several players this season, and now he’s singled out one player who has yet to truly make his mark in the Premier League – João Felix. Drogba has questioned Chelsea’s decision to sign Felix, even though the team already had plenty of options in his position.
Drogba’s Doubts About João Felix’s Signing
In August, Chelsea completed the permanent signing of João Felix from Atletico Madrid for a hefty £45 million. However, Drogba raised eyebrows, expressing reservations about the deal before it was finalized. He pointed out that Chelsea’s squad was already packed, making Felix a questionable addition.
Chelsea, on the other hand, has had a promising start to the 2024/25 season. Despite concerns about an unproven manager, Enzo Maresca has led the Blues to seven wins, two draws, and two losses in his first 11 competitive matches. Yet, Drogba still wonders how Felix fits into this equation.
Drogba Questions Felix’s Role Under Maresca
In a recent interview with Chelsea247, Drogba bluntly stated, “He can’t fit Chelsea’s style of play. He’s a great guy and a talented player to build a club around, but why did he come to Chelsea?” Drogba went on to highlight how Felix, a player of high quality, is struggling to find his place in the team. “It’s obvious the coach doesn’t know where to play him,” Drogba said.
Felix’s Limited Role So Far
Since his arrival, João Felix hasn’t started a single Premier League game. The 24-year-old has been limited to five substitute appearances in the league, with his only starts coming in the Carabao Cup against Barrow and in the Conference League against Gent.
Felix, who can play in multiple attacking positions, has mainly been used in the No. 10 role this season. But it seems clear that he is mostly serving as a backup to Cole Palmer, Chelsea’s primary playmaker.
While Felix has the versatility to play off the wing or as a second striker to strengthen Chelsea’s attack, breaking into the Premier League starting eleven still seems a distant possibility for him.
