A Season Full of Surprises for Chelsea
Chelsea have emerged as one of the Premier League’s most exciting teams this season, surprising fans and rivals alike with their dynamic style of play. Under the guidance of Enzo Maresca, the West London club has transformed into an electrifying attacking force capable of challenging any opponent.
While their defense remains a slight area of concern compared to their top competitors, Maresca has managed to unlock the potential of players like Marc Cucurella. Yet, football is an unforgiving sport, and recent reports suggest that Cucurella’s place in the squad could be at risk. The reason? Chelsea are reportedly eyeing one of the most exciting full-backs in the world, Alphonso Davies.
Chelsea’s Interest in Alphonso Davies
According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Chelsea are among several Premier League clubs pursuing Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies. The 22-year-old Canadian has also attracted interest from Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, and Liverpool, who are reportedly being kept in the loop about his situation.
Despite Bayern Munich’s hopes of retaining their star left-back, Davies is believed to be interested in a Premier League move. With his contract set to expire in the summer, he will be eligible to negotiate pre-contract agreements as early as next month. This could make him a highly sought-after free agent.
Signing Davies won’t be a straightforward task, as competition is expected to be fierce. However, given his immense talent, securing his services would be a massive coup for Chelsea—even if it spells trouble for Cucurella.
Davies vs. Cucurella: Who Comes Out on Top?
If Chelsea manage to land Davies, it’s likely the club would prioritize giving him significant game time, meaning he’d directly compete with Cucurella for the starting left-back spot.
When comparing the two players’ contributions, Davies holds a clear edge. Since the start of last season, Davies has registered four goals and nine assists in 63 appearances, averaging a goal involvement every 4.84 games. In contrast, Cucurella has managed three goals and four assists in 45 appearances, with a less impressive average of a goal involvement every 6.42 games.
The Underlying Numbers Tell the Story
The disparity between the two players becomes even more apparent when analyzing their underlying stats. According to FBref, Davies ranks in the top 1% of full-backs for successful take-ons, top 2% for progressive carries, top 3% for pass completion, top 6% for attempted passes, and top 9% for shot-creating actions per 90 minutes.
Cucurella’s best metrics, while respectable, don’t measure up. He ranks in the top 5% for pass completion, top 6% for blocks, top 24% for tackles, top 29% for attempted passes, and top 33% for aerial duels won per 90 minutes.
The Verdict: Why Chelsea Must Act
Although Cucurella remains a skilled and valuable player, Davies is in a league of his own. His offensive and defensive contributions, coupled with his ability to influence games, make him a standout performer.
If Chelsea are serious about elevating their squad to the next level, securing Alphonso Davies’ signature should be a top priority. It won’t be easy, but his potential impact on the team makes it a battle worth fighting.
