To face Wolves, Graham Potter plans to alter his starting lineup for Chelsea.
Graham Potter has made substitutions for Chelsea in each of his matches as manager thus far, and there is no reason to believe that he won’t do the same against Wolves. Due to Wesley Fofana’s injury, the Blues will undoubtedly make one change to their starting lineup, but it is still difficult to predict which formation the former Brighton manager will choose.
While Fofana and N’Golo Kante will not be available for selection when Chelsea hosts Wolves at Stamford Bridge this Saturday, Potter will still have a wide range of options. There will therefore be plenty of important decisions to be made.
The new Blues manager predicted that there would likely be further tactical adjustments during October and beyond as Chelsea tried to manage their roster and the 47-year-old got to know his players before the game this past weekend.
“You always take the opposition and our players into account,” stated Potter. We suffered a mishap and lost Marc [Cucurella] from Crystal Palace to Salzburg due to illness. There are one or two other events. That can occasionally alter the way you play and approach a game.
The personnel won’t be the same for the next 10 or 11 games before the World Cup break, so I believe it’s critical to have a few possibilities. It’s crucial to have options during this time because it’s so stressful. We need to strike a balance between change and consistency, in my opinion. It can be unstable if something happens to be inconsistent all the time.
With that said, Chelsea may once again field three central defenders, with Trevoh Chalobah representing the best replacement for Fofana on Thiago Silva’s right side. Ben Chilwell started consecutive games for the first time last season, so Marc Cucurella might be forced to take a backseat with his return.
Ruben Loftus-efforts Cheek’s should be rewarded with a start against Wolves, while Mateo Kovacic’s Wednesday night substitution should let him to start at 3 o’clock as well. Jorginho will be trying to get back into the opening lineup, though.
While Mason Mount may be the most likely to be benched, Conor Gallagher, Armando Broja, and Kai Havertz will all be vying for the starting spot. However, Potter may try to maintain the connections between Mount, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Raheem Sterling.
Even though Kepa Arrizabalaga has performed admirably in Edouard Mendy’s absence, Potter’s choice in goal could be particularly instructive going forward.
Kepa, Chalobah, Silva, Koulibaly, James, Loftus-Cheek, Kovacic, Cucurella, Sterling, Mount, and Aubameyang make up Chelsea’s predicted starting lineup.
