Just before his permanent return to RB Leipzig was announced, Timo Werner sent a touching message to Chelsea supporters.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! After passing a physical earlier today, the 26-year-signing old’s with the German club for a reported £25 million has been finalized.
It ends Werner’s mainly disappointing two years at Stamford Bridge after the Blues acquired him from Leipzig in 2020 for £47.5 million.
‘Hello, Blues. My time with Chelsea FC comes to an end today,’ the German forward posted on social media. I am really appreciative of the time I spent at this unique club. I want to use this opportunity to thank my colleagues, the coaches and staff, and especially you, the Chelsea Football Club’s loyal fans.
“Over the last two years, I’ve experienced so much love and support, and I’ll never forget how you guys have stuck with me through both good and difficult moments!”
Together, we won prizes like the Champions League, and I will never forget the song you composed and sung in my honour. I’m already anticipating perhaps returning to play at Stamford Bridge in the future.
Timo, I’ll see you shortly.
Expectations were high when Werner joined Chelsea two years ago after his last season at Leipzig saw him score 34 goals in 45 games.
But under Thomas Tuchel, his role considerably decreased after appearing frequently in his debut season. The offensive player departs Stamford Bridge after scoring 23 goals in 89 appearances.
During Chelsea’s pre-season tour of America, Werner emphasized his wish to play more frequently, particularly before the World Cup in November.
Werner was also coveted by Newcastle and Juventus, but a return to his previous team has emerged as his favorite choice.
Although it was anticipated that a loan deal would be approved, the two clubs have worked out a permanent move that will allow Chelsea to partially repay their investment from two years ago and their own spending binge this summer.
