Thibaut Courtois burnt bridges with Chelsea fans, following his controversial move to Real Madrid in 2018.
The Belgian had been signed as a top talent, but was sent to Atletico for a loan period of 3 years where he became one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
He would then return to Chelsea to take over from the legendary Petr Cech as first choice goalkeeper, only to leave after three years.
It was his manner of exit that pained Chelsea fans the most.
Courtois has now burnt bridges with Atletico Madrid fans, after his controversial statement following their recent Champions League victory.
Courtois angered Atletico supporters during his post-match interview as he made reference to Atletico Madrid’s defeat to Real Madrid in the 2014 Champions League final.
“I think I said yesterday in the press conference that when Madrid goes to finals, we win them. I’m on the good side of history,” Courtois said.
Courtois has a plaque outside Atletico’s stadium as he is among the players who have made at least 100 appearances for the club.
But following his comment, Atletico president Enrique Cerezo gave supporters the go-ahead to get rid of the plaque, with any tool of their choice.
“If you want to remove Courtois’ plaque, go with an axe and shovel and remove it,” he told Spain’s COPE radio.
Atletico Madrid supporters indeed did as instructed, as Courtois plaque was taken out.
