Edouard Mendy has completed his departure from Chelsea after spending three years at Stamford Bridge. The goalkeeper has moved to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahil, and his transfer coincided with Kai Havertz’s move to Arsenal.
Mendy, who established himself as a top-class goalkeeper during his time at Chelsea, posted a heartfelt message on Instagram following the confirmation of his move. Former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard, interestingly, responded in the comment section, praising Mendy as a gentleman and a fantastic goalkeeper.
Mendy’s standout season for Chelsea was undoubtedly his debut season, where he played a crucial role in the club’s Champions League triumph. He kept nine clean sheets in 12 games on the road to winning Europe’s elite club competition. Overall, he achieved an impressive record of 49 clean sheets in 105 appearances for the Blues.
With Mendy’s departure, Kepa Arrizabalaga remains as the senior goalkeeper at Stamford Bridge. According to Sky Sports, Mauricio Pochettino, the current Chelsea manager, is content with Kepa starting the season as the team’s first-choice goalkeeper. However, it is suggested that Chelsea would benefit from the addition of a top-quality goalkeeper this summer to provide competition for Kepa.
