Although Thomas Tuchel acknowledges Chelsea spent “too much money” this summer, the coach has no reservations about the “top character” Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang since he joined the club.
Along with Juventus midfielder Denis Zakaria, the 33-year-old striker was one of two acquisitions made by Chelsea on the last day of the transfer season, bringing the club’s total outlay for new players to a single-window record £273 million.
Tuchel praised Aubameyang’s reunion with his team, with whom he closely collaborated at Borussia Dortmund, in his remarks prior to his team’s matchup against West Ham following deadline day.
According to Tuchel, there was just one issue (at Dortmund), and it had nothing to do with timing but rather with the regulation we established for the intervals between games. He went to his hairdresser while disregarding the regulation. That, I suppose, was it! Never a huge deal, nothing major.
Although he struggles with time management, he never skips a meeting or similar event. However, it might be difficult to arrive 60 minutes early for training; occasionally, it takes 58 or 59 minutes.
He is never a problem. He has an excellent character and has a great heart. I got to know him via this. He will fit well in our dressing room, I’m certain of it. He never missed a training session while he was a player for me, and he never got hurt. I hope it continues to be this way.
Unfortunately, Chelsea will have to wait to deploy the £12 million player they acquired from Barcelona since he cracked his jaw following an armed robbery at his family’s house in Catalonia just before the transfer.
Zakaria, who is currently in Italy and awaiting a work visa, will also have to wait until Chelsea can play him. But the number of injuries has decreased, with just N’Golo Kante missing the game against West Ham.
Tuchel continued, “Aubameyang is unable to train right now. To protect his jaw, we must see to it that he receives a mask. The next week, we can begin using a mask.
“Only N’Golo is gone. Everyone else is at practise. a squad of 19 athletes. There will be 21 players total, including goalkeepers, including Auba and Denis Zakaria.
We need to work on Zakaria’s work permit, I continued. For Saturday, he won’t be on the roster. That’s a bit too near. We anticipate playing on Tuesday [against Dinamo Zagreb] and then Fulham.
Some have criticised Chelsea’s new Boehly-Clearlake ownership group for going overboard with their transfer outlay.
Along with these additions, they spent over £40 million on youth acquisitions, including Raheem Sterling, Wesley Fofana, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Marc Cucurella.
Tuchel acknowledges Chelsea’s significant expenditures, but he defined them as essential to the team’s aspirations of being at the pinnacle of European and English football.
We may debate whether or not we overspent or paid the players too much, but the guys we have are excellent athletes with excellent personalities.
“Everything was urgently required to excite the group and rebuild it. I believe our signings were great. If we focus too much on the cost, nothing will change. I guess it’s hard to say that this is much too much money.
“The market was like this for us. Perhaps our location did not always allow us to discover the best timing and pricing. Nobody’s to blame for it. The guys we obtained fit exactly. Working with this team makes me extremely pleased.
“He is the sort of profile that we identified very early as a substitute for Toni [Rudiger] and Andreas [Christensen],” the £70 million acquisition Fofana’s agent said. We are really grateful that we exercised patience, that Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali were persistent in their efforts and never gave up, and that we were able to complete this move.
Wesley is a young player who is quick and strong in set-pieces, both defending and attacking. He was one of the initial candidates to replace our players who departed the team.
