The FA confirmed on Wednesday the breaking news that Thomas Tuchel has been appointed as the new head coach of England’s national football team. Tuchel, the former Chelsea boss, becomes the third non-English manager to take charge of the England team, following in the footsteps of Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
Tuchel’s Appointment and Chelsea Fans’ Reactions
Chelsea supporters were thrilled earlier this week when rumors of Tuchel’s potential appointment started circulating. Now, with it officially confirmed, excitement is high, especially among fans who fondly remember Tuchel guiding Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2021. He will officially start his new role on January 1, 2025.
Tino Livramento: A Player on Tuchel’s Radar
One player who may be particularly interested in Tuchel’s appointment is Newcastle United’s Tino Livramento. The 21-year-old right-back has been part of recent England squads, although he has yet to make his senior debut. Interestingly, Livramento was at Chelsea when Tuchel first arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2021, but he never played for the first team and was sold to Southampton later that year.
Tuchel has previously expressed regret about Livramento’s departure from Chelsea, stating that he wanted the player to go out on loan rather than be sold permanently. His remarks, made in 2022, suggest that Tuchel has always been impressed by the defender’s potential.
England’s Right-Back Dilemma
Tuchel’s appointment brings plenty of questions about how he will approach England’s right-back position. Manchester City’s Kyle Walker has been a regular starter in recent years, but Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold has been making a strong case for the position. On top of that, Manchester City’s versatile Rico Lewis and Arsenal’s Ben White are also in the mix.
Chelsea fans are particularly eager to see if Tuchel will call up Reece James, the Blues’ captain, who has struggled with injuries lately. A reunion between Tuchel and James in the England setup would be exciting for fans of both Chelsea and the national team.
Livramento’s Future with England
Although Livramento may be lower down the pecking order right now, Tuchel’s admiration for him could boost his chances. The Newcastle full-back might not be England’s first-choice right-back yet, but with Tuchel now at the helm, he could see more opportunities to make an impact on the international stage.
Tuchel’s deep knowledge of English players and his successful coaching record at Chelsea give him a solid foundation as he prepares to lead England into their next chapter, with the 2026 World Cup looming on the horizon.
