Joao Felix’s Chelsea Journey: A Rocky Start and Uncertain Future
Limited Game Time Since Arrival
Joao Felix joined Chelsea from Atletico Madrid this August, but questions about his future are already surfacing. Despite the buzz around his signing, the Portuguese forward has only started twice in the Premier League this season. Manager Enzo Maresca appears unable to integrate him into a crowded attacking lineup, which includes standout players like Cole Palmer.
This lack of involvement has reportedly left Felix dissatisfied with his current situation at Stamford Bridge.
Felix’s Frustration with Lack of Opportunities
It’s hard to fault Felix for feeling unsettled. At 25, he’s in his prime but isn’t getting the game time he needs to thrive. However, journalist Simon Phillips reports via his Si Phillips Talks Chelsea Substack that Felix is unlikely to leave Chelsea during the January transfer window.
“Joao Felix will NOT be leaving in January, our source has confirmed,” Phillips wrote. “They even expect him to still be here in the summer. But, with Felix eager to play, his frustration over limited chances remains a concern.”
A Costly Substitute
Chelsea shelled out £45 million for Felix, making him an expensive benchwarmer. But he’s not alone in this predicament, as several other high-profile Chelsea players also find themselves on the sidelines. Fans were hopeful Felix would start against Fulham last week, but Maresca opted not to include him in the starting lineup, leaving supporters disappointed.
Maresca’s High Praise Doesn’t Align with Actions
Interestingly, Maresca has publicly praised Felix’s unique abilities. Following Chelsea’s 3-0 win against Aston Villa earlier this season, Maresca said, “Cole Palmer and Joao Felix are the players that make people pay for tickets. It doesn’t mean the rest aren’t good, but they’re different from the rest.”
Despite these compliments, Maresca’s decisions don’t reflect his words. Felix didn’t play during Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to Fulham, raising eyebrows among fans and analysts alike.
The Bigger Picture: Was Felix’s Arrival a Strategic Move?
Some speculate that Felix’s signing may have been more about facilitating Conor Gallagher’s move to Atletico Madrid than strengthening Chelsea’s squad. If true, it highlights the uncertainty around Felix’s long-term role in the team.
For now, Felix remains a Chelsea player, but whether he can find his footing and secure regular starts remains a pressing question. Fans and critics will be watching closely to see if Maresca’s actions start matching his glowing assessments of the talented forward.
