Chelsea news: Graham Potter is back working with the Blues as they get ready for the Premier League to resume after the World Cup by welcoming a new player to training.
Just about a month before the Premier League’s return, Graham Potter’s Chelsea team resumed training. As the World Cup group stage draws to a close, more players from the first team will be ready to join up once their assignments in Qatar are finished.
Potter has had time to regroup and reenergize after a hectic start to life. The Blues have had just over two weeks off since losing 1-0 to Newcastle. Once domestic activity resumes, there won’t be much time for error because crucial games will come thick and fast.
Chelsea will have the chance to improve on the fitness and mental acuity of returning players from injury as they take on Aston Villa in a friendly in Abu Dhabi as part of a midseason training camp. Reece James and Wesley Fofana, who missed the World Cup due to a knee injury, will be part of this group.
The Frenchman had a lower chance of playing in Qatar, but he also injured his knee before the break, effectively ending any hope he could have had of joining Didier Deschamps’ team. After the break, Potter will receive a major boost with the return of the defensive pairing.
Ben Chilwell will be absent for the former Brighton manager, however, as he is expected to remain sidelined for at least another two months. Lewis Hall, a young player, had scope to move into first-team contention because of this opening, which the dynamic full-back most surely took advantage of.
After making his Blues debut in the FA Cup last season, Hall impressed, earning his first start against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup due to Chilwell’s injury. Hall, a versatile player who can also play in midfield, at fullback, and on the flank, has been one of the standout performers for the Under-21 team.
Hall also earned his Premier League debut later that week in the loss to Newcastle because Potter was so moved by his performance—and was left without many other options. Felix Johnston, a Chelsea youth specialist, claims that Hall has been promoted to the first team on a permanent basis after moving across the training site as players are now reporting for duty at Cobham.
Alongside fellow Under-21 talents Omari Hutchinson and Charlie Webster, Hall has also been spotted in pictures of the team’s return to practise. Hall’s promotion makes sense in Chilwell’s absence given that the World Cup players’ fitness will fluctuate and that Potter has a difficult assignment on his hands. It may also be a sign that the England left-back isn’t close to returning just yet.
