Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has once again decided to trim his squad, letting go of more players as the new season approaches.
Chalobah and Gallagher Left Out of First-Team Plans
Trevoh Chalobah and Conor Gallagher have been excluded from Chelsea’s main squad, with Gallagher actively searching for a solution after a potential transfer to Atletico Madrid fell through at the last minute. The decision comes as part of Maresca’s ongoing effort to reshape the Blues’ lineup.
Ben Chilwell Told to Seek a New Club
In a surprising move, another senior Chelsea player has been told to find a new team. Despite being the vice-captain behind Reece James, Ben Chilwell appears to be out of favor. Maresca hinted that Marc Cucurella will be the first-choice left-back this season, further limiting Chilwell’s chances for regular game time.
Chilwell, who only logged 64 minutes during pre-season despite having the summer off, didn’t feature in the last three friendly matches. Although he remains in the first-team squad during training, Maresca suggested that Chilwell would benefit from moving elsewhere to get more minutes on the pitch.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the season opener against Manchester City, Maresca explained, “Chilly hasn’t trained for a few days because he’s been unwell. I love his attitude, but he’s struggled to find his best role with us. We had 22 players in training today, and naturally, they all want to play against City on Sunday, but not everyone can. It’s not good for the players or myself if they’re not getting game time. It might be better for him to leave and find opportunities elsewhere. With the transfer window still open, we’ll see what happens.”
Chelsea’s Squad Still Packed With Players
Despite recent departures, Chelsea still has a hefty squad of 43 players, including high-profile stars like Romelu Lukaku and Kepa Arrizabalaga. However, Maresca has cut 15 players from the main proceedings at Cobham training ground, allowing only the 28 players who were part of the United States tour to join first-team sessions.
Co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart have been entrusted with finding new clubs for the players who have fallen out of favor.
