Maresca in Talks with Chelsea Board Over Transfers
According to The Standard, Enzo Maresca has already started discussing summer transfers with the Chelsea board, even before his official appointment. Maresca has committed to a five-year contract to take over as Chelsea’s new manager, following Mauricio Pochettino’s departure by mutual consent 10 days ago. Fabrizio Romano reported that the contract includes an option for an additional year, reflecting Chelsea’s confidence in the former Manchester City staff member.
Maresca’s Managerial Background
Before moving to Leicester City last year, Maresca worked under Pep Guardiola. He led Leicester to win the Championship title and secured automatic promotion to the Premier League in his first season. Under his leadership, Leicester boasted the best defensive record in England’s second tier and had the second-best offensive record.
Why Chelsea Chose Maresca
Romano explained that Maresca’s focus on possession, quality football, and game dominance, combined with his knowledge of top-tier football, convinced Chelsea to hire him. Chelsea, along with Todd Boehly, plan to pursue a striker for Maresca. Romano anticipates a busy but strategic summer for Chelsea, including potential signings of a new goalkeeper and possibly one or two center-backs. Additionally, Chelsea is expected to focus on acquiring a new striker, with Benjamin Sesko being highly rated by Chelsea and other clubs like Arsenal and Manchester United.
Chelsea’s Striker Search
Besides Sesko, Chelsea is eyeing other potential strikers, focusing on securing a top goal-scorer. Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez, currently embroiled in a contract dispute, has caught Chelsea’s interest.
Maresca’s Request for Lautaro Martinez
Spanish reports indicate that Maresca has specifically requested Chelsea to sign Lautaro Martinez from Inter this summer. Martinez, who scored 24 Serie A goals last season, is a World Cup winner and only 26 years old. He could significantly strengthen Chelsea’s attack, but reports suggest that signing him might cost as much as £94 million.
