Enzo Maresca is set to take over from Mauricio Pochettino as Chelsea’s new manager. Reports from last week confirmed that Maresca has agreed to a five-year contract with Chelsea, stepping in for Pochettino.
According to The Athletic, the club is on the verge of announcing Maresca’s move from Leicester City.
Transfer Activity Underway
Maresca appears to have already started working on transfers. The 44-year-old has reportedly given the green light for Chelsea to bring in a new player this summer.
Maresca Approves New Signing
Next season, Chelsea will be without central defender Thiago Silva, who is set to join Fluminense. To fill the void, it looks like Chelsea will sign Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that the deal is close.
CaughtOffside claims that Maresca has approved the signing of Adarabioyo, who will join Chelsea on a free transfer as his contract with Fulham expires this month. Adarabioyo made 25 appearances in all competitions for Fulham this season.
Why Maresca Approved Tosin Adarabioyo
With Silva’s departure, Maresca likely sees the need for another central defender. Additionally, there is speculation that Trevoh Chalobah might leave, with links to Manchester United.
Adarabioyo, described as a “fantastic” player by former teammate Darragh Lenihan, brings Premier League experience and aerial prowess. According to WhoScored, Adarabioyo averaged 2.9 aerial duels won per game this season, the highest in Fulham’s squad.
Given his availability on a free transfer, it’s clear why Maresca would endorse Adarabioyo’s addition to the team.
Defensive Squad Options
Adarabioyo will join a roster that includes Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi, Levi Colwill, and Wesley Fofana. With these options, it will be intriguing to see Maresca’s preferred lineup once everyone is fit.
Chelsea will need to bolster their defense significantly, as they conceded 63 goals in the Premier League last season.
