Michael Dawson Urges Pep Guardiola to Bring Chelsea’s Romeo Lavia Back to Manchester City
Michael Dawson has made a strong case for Manchester City to consider re-signing Romeo Lavia, labeling the Chelsea midfielder as a ‘perfect fit’ for Pep Guardiola’s team.
Lavia’s Journey from City to Chelsea
Lavia, a product of Manchester City’s academy, made just two senior appearances for the club before being sold to Southampton in 2022. Despite Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League, the Belgium international stood out during a challenging campaign, earning a £58m move to Chelsea in the summer of 2023.
However, Lavia’s time at Stamford Bridge has been marred by injury struggles. While he has had limited opportunities on the pitch, his performances when fit have been promising, showing glimpses of the potential that made him such a sought-after player.
Dawson’s High Praise for Lavia
Speaking to Sky Sports, former Premier League defender Michael Dawson expressed his admiration for Lavia’s talents and his belief that the midfielder would thrive at Manchester City, particularly given the club’s current injury issues with Rodri.
“You look at Romeo Lavia—he’s one who would have been perfect for Manchester City and the way they play, especially with Rodri being out,” Dawson said. “He’s gone to Southampton, done brilliantly, and then moved to Chelsea where injuries have held him back a bit. But when we’ve seen him play, he’s shown that he’s exactly the kind of player City could use.”
Other Former City Stars Making Waves
Lavia isn’t the only former Manchester City player making headlines elsewhere. Cole Palmer and Liam Delap have also caught attention after leaving the Etihad Stadium. Dawson highlighted Palmer’s growth at Chelsea, admitting he was already a fan of the winger before his move.
“I’m a huge Cole Palmer fan,” Dawson added. “Even before he went to Chelsea, he had something special. The question is always whether players like Palmer, Lavia, or Delap would have had the chance to fulfill their potential at City.”
City’s Challenges This Season
Manchester City, aiming for a record-breaking fifth consecutive Premier League title under Guardiola, have struggled this season. Injuries to key players like Rodri have seen the team slip to eighth in the table, winning less than half of their league matches.
While City might now see Lavia’s impressive form at Chelsea as a missed opportunity, Dawson’s comments suggest there’s still time for Guardiola to reconsider bringing the midfielder back into the fold.
Lavia’s Potential and Praise from Teammates
Lavia’s talent hasn’t gone unnoticed among his peers either. Speaking last summer, the Premier League Young Player of the Season reflected on Lavia’s ability:
“One player I’ve played with who’s really good is Romeo Lavia,” he told SPORTbible. “He’s had a tough time with injuries, but when he gets going, everyone will see just how good he is.”
As Lavia continues to recover and showcase his abilities, speculation around his future—and whether Manchester City might make a move to bring him back—continues to grow.
