Chelsea’s Goalkeeping Crisis Continues After Costly Error Against Aston Villa
Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation has been in turmoil for years, and things have only gone downhill since Edouard Mendy’s decline in form.
After being dropped midway through last season, Robert Sanchez was given another chance this year. However, a series of costly mistakes saw him benched once again.
Filip Jorgensen, who stepped in as his replacement, hasn’t been entirely convincing either. His latest error against Aston Villa proved disastrous, handing the opposition a crucial win.
Maresca Defends Jorgensen Amid Growing Concerns
Following the match, manager Enzo Maresca was forced to stand by Jorgensen—just as he had done with Sanchez before ultimately dropping him.
“The goalkeeper position is a delicate one. A striker can miss chances without much consequence, but when a keeper makes a mistake, it’s always noticeable. We need to support each other, stay strong, and work hard. In two days, we have another game at home, and hopefully, we can finally win in front of our fans,” Maresca stated.
Uncertainty Over Jorgensen’s Future in Goal
When pressed for a clear answer on whether Jorgensen would start against Southampton on Tuesday, Maresca’s hesitant response was telling.
“I don’t know at this moment,” he admitted, leaving room for speculation.
This ongoing instability is far from ideal. While a solid defensive unit with commanding center-backs would undoubtedly help any Chelsea goalkeeper, Jorgensen’s latest blunder had nothing to do with defensive lapses. It was simply a young goalkeeper failing to keep the ball out—a mistake that could cost him his starting spot.
