Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was left out of the starting lineup for the Blues’ Champions League match against Real Madrid after reports surfaced that the Senegalese international had rejected a new contract offer.
Edouard Mendy is said to have turned down a new contract with Chelsea after being offered less than rival Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The Senegalese international was benched in the Blues’ 1-0 Champions League loss to Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night. It followed the 30-year-slump old’s in form and an alleged patella tendon injury.
However, according to The Evening Standard, Mendy is said to have turned down a new contract with the west London club after being offered less than the £190,000 that his fellow goalkeeper and Chelsea No.2 Kepa earns. When asked about Mendy’s form ahead of the Zagreb match, manager Thomas Tuchel gave a cryptic response.

Tuchel stated, “I think it’s a very sensitive position in football in general — and it’s not all about pure quality and decision-making.” It’s also about the feeling and the feeling that you have confidence, and sometimes it’s a bit of luck.” So, this is what you need from leaders and goalkeepers, as well as the kind of momentum that allows them to make minor mistakes without being punished. Now, he gets punished a lot for not doing a lot of things wrong, but I have no doubts.
“Everything is fine. We have two fantastic goalkeepers, both of whom are great guys. We are aware that [Mendy] is in such a situation, but we must first deal with it internally before informing you.”
Mendy was instrumental in Chelsea winning the Champions League in his first season, stepping in and pushing his Spanish counterpart out of the starting lineup. He also helped Senegal win its first Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year.
However, the shot-stopper has already made several errors this season. He was caught in possession against Leeds and failed to clear a looping header from a set piece against West Ham, both of which resulted in goals.
