Following their draw with Croatia, Roberto Martinez’s team was eliminated, and Hazard has since announced on Instagram that he has “put an end to my international career.”
He stated: “Today a page turns… I appreciate your affection. I appreciate your exceptional assistance. Thank you for sharing all of this joy with us since 2008. I’ve made the decision to discontinue my international career. The successors are prepared. You are missed, #onestensemble.”
Hazard played for Chelsea for seven years, making 352 appearances and scoring 110 goals to help the Blues win six trophies, including two Premier League titles.
Hazard joined Real Madrid in 2019 after helping Chelsea win the Europa League, but injuries have limited him to just 72 appearances over three seasons, including just 98 minutes in La Liga this year.
Hazard started Belgium’s opening match of the tournament despite concerns about his fitness, and Michy Batshuayi’s goal gave them a slim victory over Canada. However, a shocking loss to Morocco and a goalless draw with Croatia caused Belgium to exit the tournament in the group stages.
Despite having a talented squad that includes Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois and Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, the 31-year-old made 126 senior appearances for his country and scored 33 goals, but he was unable to lead them to a trophy.
