Enzo Fernandez of Benfica is a “good” young player, but according to former Premier League forward Gabriel Agbonlahor, he is not worth the £105 million Chelsea is apparently willing to spend.
Fernandez’s €120 million release clause must be satisfied for Benfica to agree to let him depart in January, as they have made plain.
Fernandez was instrumental in Argentina’s World Cup victory and was voted Best Young Player of the World Cup. Fernandez left River Plate for Benfica last summer for a rumored initial fee of just €10 million (£8.8 million).
He appeared to be in control as I watched him, didn’t he? “I was usually getting the ball in such huge games [at the World Cup],” Agbonlahor said to talkSPORT.
“He was something Argentina missed out on in the first few games.
“But £105m? You can’t, in my opinion, pay it off with a World Cup.
“If that makes sense, I don’t think he was amazing. He was active and played effectively for the team, and I thought he looked well on the ball.
He’s a good player, but…
“Perhaps it’s my age. when athletes are so youthful… He’s 21. Chelsea is in severe need of a new midfielder, to be sure.
“But I wouldn’t pay for myself.”
