Don’t waste money – Glen Johnson blast Chelsea star He did not worth that salary he’s demanding for
Glen Johnson has warned Chelsea not to let Mason Mount hold them hostage, but he worries that he could be crucial to their chances of bringing in Declan Rice this summer.
The England international has played a significant role for Chelsea’s previous three managers, and it appears that Graham Potter will continue to prioritise him in his long-term ambitions.
Retaining academy graduates Reece James and Mount was one of Todd Boehly’s top aims after taking over the west London club.
James signed a six-year contract committing his future to his hometown team back in September, but talks with Mount have stalled and have been postponed until the next year.
As one of Chelsea’s lowest paid first team players, Mount demands a raise in pay to reflect his importance to new manager Graham Potter.
The 23-year-old, who has been designated as the club’s future captain, is wanted by Chelsea desperately, but a transfer to Liverpool of the Premier League may be more alluring.
According to reports, Mount wants £300,000 per week, but Johnson, a former Chelsea defender, thinks the talented midfielder doesn’t deserve that much money.
Johnson worries that Chelsea may need to give in to the expectations of their academy graduate in order to woo the West Ham captain in the summer. Rice, Mount’s close friend and international teammate, has been frequently linked with Chelsea.
I don’t think he’s at the point where he can expect £300,000 a week, the guy said.
He’s a good player, and Chelsea won’t want to lose him, but you can’t be a pawn in someone else’s game. He doesn’t seem like the kind of boy who would quit his job if he didn’t get paid £300,000 every week, in my opinion.
That kind of fella doesn’t appear to be him. I don’t think that’s accurate, so I think they’ll finally reach a compromise.
If Chelsea decides to buy Declan Rice as well, they might need to keep Mount for tactical reasons.
