Former footballer and pundit Danny Murphy has shared his belief that most Chelsea fans would rather see Conor Gallagher in the team over their current midfield star.
Chelsea sold the 24-year-old Gallagher to Atletico Madrid during the summer transfer window, parting ways with a homegrown talent who had risen through their academy ranks. Gallagher made 95 appearances for Chelsea before moving to Spain.
Gallagher a Perfect Fit for Atletico Madrid
Gallagher himself believes his playing style would have suited Chelsea’s current manager, Enzo Maresca. However, he’s already proving to be a great fit under Atletico boss Diego Simeone, showcasing his abilities in La Liga.
Conor Gallagher vs. Enzo Fernandez
According to Danny Murphy, many Chelsea supporters would swap Gallagher for their current midfielder, Enzo Fernandez. Speaking on talkSPORT, Murphy said:
“Although they’re different players, I don’t think there’s many Chelsea fans that wouldn’t trade Fernandez for Gallagher right now. He’s one of those players who, when he’s on your team, you know exactly what you’re going to get.”
As Gallagher continues to shine in Madrid, discussions surrounding his departure are likely to remain a hot topic, but Chelsea must now focus on their new chapter without him. The debate over whether he was sold too soon or not is irrelevant at this point, as the club needs to concentrate on their performance on the pitch.
Chelsea’s Midfield Still Packed with Talent
Despite Gallagher’s departure, Chelsea still boasts a highly talented midfield, with Enzo Fernandez playing a pivotal role.
Fernandez: A Key Player for Chelsea
Although Fernandez missed Chelsea’s recent win over Bournemouth due to illness, the 23-year-old midfielder has quickly established himself as a key figure under Maresca, regularly featuring in the starting lineup.
Both offensively and defensively, Fernandez has been making significant contributions to the team’s success. Described by Andy Townsend as a “gifted footballer,” his talents are clear, and fans are eager to see even more from him, especially when he steps up as captain in the absence of Reece James.
