Cole Palmer: Rising Star in the Premier League
Last season, Cole Palmer was undeniably one of the top performers in the Premier League, and this season he’s keeping up the same high standard.
A Stellar Start to the Season
The 2024 PFA Young Player of the Year has already made a significant impact in the current campaign. In just seven Premier League appearances for Chelsea, Palmer has been involved in 11 goals, highlighting his contribution to the team’s attacking play.
As Chelsea prepare to face Liverpool today, Palmer has the chance to further add to his tally. Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher even suggested that Palmer’s presence could lead Liverpool to a title win, emphasizing just how pivotal the 22-year-old has become.
The Cost of Success: Palmer on Being Marked
However, being one of the best players in the division has its drawbacks. For some time now, Palmer has noticed that he’s been getting marked more frequently on the pitch. This kind of attention comes as no surprise considering the damage he can do when given space.
In an interview with Chelsea’s official website ahead of the Liverpool clash, Palmer addressed this growing trend of tighter marking, saying:
“Towards the end of last season, maybe in the last three or four months, I felt like I was being marked more, and it’s carried on into this season.”
Palmer joked about the increasing number of fouls he’s been subjected to, adding, “It seems like I’m getting fouled more! I’m going to get double shin pads — one at the front and one at the back! They only do little kicks, so it doesn’t hurt too much. I see it as a compliment.”
Praise from a Chelsea Legend
Chelsea icon Gianfranco Zola, a player who knows all about dealing with tight marking, has admitted that Palmer’s rise has been a pleasant surprise. His ability to handle increased pressure and still perform at a high level has impressed even those who’ve seen it all.
