As Chelsea tries to reduce the gap between Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League, Todd Boehly is expected to give Thomas Tuchel a £200 million transfer budget. The Blues finished third in the 2021-22 season, albeit 19 points behind the champions.
With a number of areas in need of reinforcement, this summer is set to be one of the busiest at Stamford Bridge in years. Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, and Marcos Alonso are all expected to go, leaving Tuchel’s defensive options severely weakened.
Both N’Golo Kante and Jorginho are nearing the final year of their contracts, and it must be decided if they will be moved on and, if so, who will replace them. Romelu Lukaku’s future is also unknown, while Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, and Christian Pulisic have all been linked with departures.
According to a source in The Telegraph, Tuchel will have £200 million to bolster his team when certain player transactions are taken into consideration. Lukaku and Marcus Bettinelli were the only new players recruited last summer, with midfielder Saul Niguez poised to return to Atletico Madrid after his loan stint.
The Blues have a long list of alternatives to reinforce their backline as a handful of players are ready to go. According to a different article from The Telegraph, Jules Kounde and Josko Gvardiol were given priority. Pau Torres and Jose Maria Gimenez are among the others on the list. Raheem Sterling has also been linked with a move if one of the existing attacking options is gone.
