Chelsea could potentially secure long-standing transfer target Jordan Pickford this summer, aiming to resolve their goalkeeping concerns. The England goalkeeper’s future reportedly depends on Everton’s financial strategy as they tackle their well-known financial challenges. Despite ensuring their Premier League safety, Everton may be compelled to offload key players to alleviate their profit and sustainability issues, with Pickford being among their prized assets.
Reports suggest Chelsea is eyeing a new goalkeeper in the upcoming transfer window. While Robert Sanchez struggled and was subsequently benched after his arrival from Brighton, Djordje Petrovic, another recent Chelsea acquisition, has stepped up admirably to replace him. However, there’s a prevailing sentiment within the club that they could aim for upgrades in the goalkeeping department, especially with Kepa Arrizabalaga unlikely to remain at Stamford Bridge upon his return from Real Madrid’s loan spell.
Hence, Chelsea is likely optimistic about the prospect of signing Pickford, given the reported uncertainty surrounding his future at Everton. According to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, Pickford’s situation warrants close attention.
Despite being England’s primary goalkeeper since 2018, Pickford has yet to secure a move to one of the Premier League’s top clubs. He arrived at Everton in 2017 and, despite occasional links with Chelsea and Manchester United, has stayed put at Goodison Park, nearing 300 appearances for the club.
In 2018, there were reports from the Sun indicating former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich’s interest in signing Pickford as a replacement for the departing Thibaut Courtois, who was heading to Real Madrid. Pickford’s fellow England teammate Jack Butland was also reportedly on Chelsea’s radar. However, neither deal materialized, with Butland remaining at Stoke City and subsequently joining Crystal Palace. Meanwhile, Chelsea opted for Arrizabalaga, who now appears set for departure this summer.
Arrizabalaga’s loan move to Real Madrid came after Courtois’ injury, but the Spaniard has struggled to reclaim his starting spot, hinting at a potential exit. Once Chelsea’s record signing at £72 million, Arrizabalaga’s future remains uncertain as he prepares to return to Stamford Bridge, with his remarks about Mauricio Pochettino suggesting a willingness to seek a new challenge elsewhere.
