Chelsea’s Summer Transfer Window 2024/25
In the 2024/25 summer transfer window, Chelsea splashed out €261m (£216.2m) on transfers, offsetting much of that spending by generating €198m (£164m) through player sales. A significant portion of those sales came from academy graduates, helping the club stay within PSR regulations.

These departures represented “pure profit” on the club’s financial books—a key strategy under owner Todd Boehly. While most sales involved fringe players, Gallagher’s exit stood out, given his crucial role last season, where he made 50 appearances, scored seven goals, provided nine assists, and logged 4,036 minutes.
Gallagher’s Departure: A Missed Opportunity?
Gallagher, a product of Chelsea’s academy, made 95 senior appearances for the club, contributing ten goals and ten assists in 6,061 minutes of play. Former manager Mauricio Pochettino considered the midfielder “priceless,” favoring him throughout his tenure. Despite his importance, Chelsea sold Gallagher to Atlético Madrid for around £35.8m. So far, the 25-year-old has made 30 appearances for the Spanish club, scoring twice, assisting three times, and playing 1,633 minutes.
While Gallagher’s current market value has since risen, making the sale look like a misstep, another summer departure appears to have been better timed.
Maatsen Sale: A Well-Timed Deal
Selling academy talent like Gallagher has become routine at Stamford Bridge, with recent high-profile exits including Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori, Tammy Abraham, and Marc Guehi. Among those departures, Ian Maatsen’s transfer to Aston Villa stands out as a well-negotiated deal. The 22-year-old full-back signed a six-year contract with Villa, who paid £37.5m to secure his services.
Since the move, Maatsen has made 30 appearances, registered one assist, helped secure five clean sheets, and played 1,029 minutes. Notably, his market value has dropped to €32m (£26.5m) since the transfer, suggesting Chelsea capitalized on his strong loan spell at Borussia Dortmund.
During the 2023/24 preseason, Pochettino had praised Maatsen’s versatility and intelligence, stating, “I am so happy with him. He is a player that can play in different positions. He has quality, he understands the game, and he is such a clever player.” However, given Maatsen’s current trajectory, Chelsea’s decision to sell when they did appears financially prudent.
That said, with youth on his side, Maatsen still has ample time to fulfill his potential. The Blues may one day view this sale differently, but for now, the timing and profit generated make it a win for the club.
