Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel will be keen for his team to win this afternoon against Wolves at Stamford Bridge. The Blues suffered a demoralizing setback to Everton in their previous Premier League match, but will be looking to pick up all three points against Bruno Lage’s side to take a step closer to a top-four finish and Champions League qualification next season.
Express Sport looks at the Chelsea team that might be entrusted with defeating Wolves later today in west London.
Mendy, the goalkeeper
Since joining Chelsea from Rennes in the summer of 2020, Edouard Mendy has established himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the world. He is without a doubt one of the club’s most important assets, and he is almost guaranteed to preserve his starting spot in goal against Wolves, ahead of Kepa Arrizabalaga.
This season, the Senegal international has a total of 21 clean sheets for the Blues in all competitions, and he will be eager to add to that number with another authoritative display this afternoon. He’ll have to keep out the likes of Raul Jimenez and Hwang Hee-chan for the visitors, who were soundly thrashed by Brighton and Hove Albion at Molineux last time out.
Azpilicueta, Silva, and Rudiger in defense
Cesar Azpilicueta is anticipated to start for Chelsea against Wolves later today, and he might be joined in the back three by Thiago Silva and Antonio Rudiger at Stamford Bridge. The former has also played in a wing-back role this season, but will most likely be in a central role, where he will aim to utilize his expertise to keep things tight throughout the 90 minutes.
Azpilicueta and Silva have already signed new contracts to ensure they will play for the Blues next season, but Antonio Rudiger is poised to leave at the conclusion of this season after failing to reach an agreement with the club in recent months. He will, however, remain a major component of the team until his departure, and is expected to play his normal role when the action begins this afternoon.
