Apart from the fact that Chelsea’s defense began to fail towards the end of the season, we’d all agree that the biggest issue was the offense.
Chelsea began the season on a high note, scoring goals at will, with Thomas Tuchel’s side putting seven past Norwich City in October. However, after the first few months of the season, when Ben Chilwell and Reece James were sidelined, the goal drought began.
Chelsea icon Pat Nevin is glad that James and Chilwell have returned from injury and feels that if they stay healthy, Romelu Lukaku and Kai Havertz can score a combined 40 league goals for the Blues next season.
“Clearly Chelsea are the best of the rest after Man City and Liverpool in terms of points and goals scored,” Nevin wrote for Chelsea FC.
“When you look at the score lines between the two clubs this season, the space behind the Reds in particular is tiny.”
“However, if we are to be in the major shoot-out at the conclusion of next season, we need to score another 20 to 25 league goals.” Is it even possible?
“I believe it is. If Reece and Chilly keep healthy and on form, they will be able to score more goals, not just for themselves but also for their teammates. That isn’t to suggest the other wing-backs won’t help out, but rotations will keep everyone fresh.
“Are Romelu and Kai capable of scoring 20 goals in a league season after failing to do so in the Premier League this season?” Of course, they are, which is why Thomas Tuchel’s work is so fascinating.
“He knows Chelsea is third in the league, but he also realizes there is an opportunity for progress both individually and collectively within the squad.”
