Chelsea made some significant additions to their squad over the summer transfer window, particularly boosting their wide areas. The signings of Jadon Sancho and Pedro Neto have already started paying off, with Sancho making an early impact at Stamford Bridge.
Sancho Making His Mark
In just three appearances, Sancho has managed to rack up three assists, proving to be a key contributor in the Blues’ recent success. Before he arrived, however, Chelsea had been linked with several other wide players.
Chelsea’s Interest in Karim Adeyemi
One of the names heavily linked with Chelsea was Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund, a winger who had been making waves in the Champions League. Back in July, reports surfaced that Chelsea had a strong interest in the 22-year-old. According to the Daily Mail, Dortmund was open to selling Adeyemi for around £35 million.
Adeyemi Staying at Dortmund
Ultimately, Adeyemi remained at Dortmund, much to the club’s satisfaction. The German international recently delivered a stellar performance, scoring a hat-trick in Dortmund’s emphatic 7-1 victory over Celtic in the Champions League.
Chelsea Have No Regrets Over Not Signing Adeyemi
While Adeyemi was clinical in his performance against Celtic, his overall track record doesn’t suggest he’s the most prolific scorer. Last season, for instance, he only netted three goals in 21 Bundesliga matches. Given Chelsea’s initial interest didn’t materialize, the club moved on to signing Sancho and Neto.
Sancho and Neto Offer Better Value
Sancho’s performance so far has justified Chelsea’s decision to sign him over Adeyemi. Not only has he been impactful on the pitch, but Chelsea also secured his services for a fee less than what Dortmund was asking for Adeyemi—Chelsea paid under £25 million for the England international.
While Adeyemi could still develop into a standout player, Chelsea is unlikely to regret their choice. Right now, the focus is on Sancho’s current form, which has made Adeyemi’s absence from Stamford Bridge feel like no big loss.
