Chelsea hold meeting to sign midfielder ‘very satisfactory’ – ‘Shock deal in process’
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!According to Tuesday’s AS, Chelsea is making serious efforts to sign Gavi from Barcelona. The 18-year-old midfielder has risen through the ranks of Barcelona’s academy and made his way into their first team in August 2021. His youth team contract was set to expire at the end of this season.
However, Gavi’s impressive displays since last season have convinced Barca to renew his contract until 2026. But due to the club’s financial difficulties, the renewal hasn’t been approved by La Liga. As it stands, Gavi could be released as a free agent in the summer, and Chelsea wants to take advantage of this opportunity to sign him.
Chelsea representatives, led by sporting director Christopher Vivell, met with Gavi’s agent, Iván De la Peña, in Madrid three weeks ago. Vivell conveyed to the young midfielder the key role he would have in their project and their strong desire to sign him.
The first meeting was ‘very satisfactory,’ and the two parties have agreed to continue their talks for a potential deal in the summer. Another meeting is expected to take place soon to discuss the details of the operation.
Apart from a contract offer, Chelsea is also prepared to offer Gavi significant signing-on bonuses if he were to arrive as a free agent. Gavi, for his part, is reportedly unhappy with the way Barca has handled his contract situation and doesn’t feel that his case is being given enough importance.
