Armando Broja disclosed how he used Tottenham Hotspur as a springboard to sign with his old team Chelsea.

Armando Broja has explained why he rejected a childhood career with Tottenham Hotspur and instead decided to go with London rivals Chelsea. The 21-year-old striker joined the Blues academy when he was just nine years old and has now extended his stay until 2028 after signing a new six-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

Broja discussed how he was originally hesitant to join the club after being seen by the north London side at a competition in an interview with The Players’ Tribune. “I remember going to a competition. The Tottenham scout really came to observe another child,” the Albanian international recalled.

“They approached my Mom and Dad before I even heard about it since I obviously played well in that event and won the best player and top goalscorer. So, when I got home, my parents informed me that “Tottenham came over to us,” and I wondered, “Who is Tottenham? ‘”
Broja said, “Because I was so young, all I really knew was my Sunday league team, so in my thoughts, it was just Burnham Juniors – that’s all I knew!

They said things like, “Oh, Tottenham is in the Premier League, this, this, this, and this, and I was like, ‘Oh wow,’ and I said, ‘I want to go, I want to go,’
“We’re certainly chatting to them,” they said. However, I was overjoyed since I believed I would join a prestigious squad.

Broja continued, “My mum’s first cousin, he’s a massive Chelsea fan. That’s why I grew to be a Chelsea fan, and that’s how getting a move to Tottenham fuelled my desire to fulfill my dream to join my childhood club.

The Cobham graduate continued, “He would take me to every Chelsea game when I was like three or four, so I always loved Chelsea. He likes Chelsea, so I assumed that meant I should also support Chelsea. However, I was unaware of the rivalry between Tottenham and Chelsea, so when I decided to join Tottenham, I had no idea what to expect.

“In my brain, I supported Chelsea while I was at Tottenham, but I always wanted to defeat them to prove to the Chelsea staff and everyone else that I wanted to join Chelsea. We are losing by a score of two, so I begged my manager to let me on while I was still on the bench.

“As soon as I came in, I got an assist and then I got a goal after that so we drew two-two. And then we walked over to the other side of the pitch and played the other team. We won twelve-nil I guess, and I scored nine. Straight after that, the two Chelsea lads came over and said ‘Wow, we want you.

“When they stated that I didn’t think of anything else, I simply wanted to join Chelsea. So finally that certainly did happen and joined Chelsea end of under-nines, the start of under tens so I’ve been there since.”

Despite Broja yet to start for Chelsea this season, he’s ready to play a significant role in the Blues’ success. And, with Graham Potter in the dugout, the Albanian is primed to take his game to the next level.
