It’s clear that some Newcastle United supporters haven’t moved past Tosin Adarabioyo’s decision to join Chelsea instead of their club.
This summer, Chelsea secured Adarabioyo from Fulham, despite Newcastle’s strong interest in the defender. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that Newcastle had come close to signing him, but ultimately, Adarabioyo opted for a move to their Premier League rivals.
Chelsea recently faced Newcastle, and the reception for Adarabioyo was far from friendly from the Newcastle fans.
Adarabioyo’s Reaction to Newcastle Fans’ Taunts
While Adarabioyo didn’t make it onto the pitch during Sunday’s game, he did go through warm-ups as a substitute, offering Newcastle fans a chance to jeer. NewcastleWorld reports that Adarabioyo responded with a simple, cheeky smirk, brushing off the crowd’s unkind chants with humor.
The two could meet again on Wednesday when Newcastle hosts Chelsea at St. James’ Park in the Carabao Cup. Adarabioyo might have an opportunity to take the field, as Enzo Maresca was seen working closely with him during Monday’s training, hinting he may be in contention for the match.
Adarabioyo’s Opportunity to Prove Himself
Earlier in the season, Adarabioyo had the chance to showcase his abilities in Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to Liverpool, although his performance was mixed. He received an early yellow card and was later substituted in the second half.
Nonetheless, the 27-year-old defender has shown Maresca that he has much to offer. In Chelsea’s 3-0 win against West Ham United, Adarabioyo made five clearances, ranking third in the game, according to Sofascore. It’s now a matter of finding consistency, particularly against top-tier teams, a challenge he struggled with during the Liverpool game.
As he looks forward to Chelsea’s next matchup with Newcastle, Adarabioyo has the opportunity to reinforce his role and demonstrate the reliability Chelsea saw when they signed him.
