Chelsea will not be signing RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko this summer. Initially considered a key target, journalist Simon Phillips reported that Chelsea was prepared to activate his release clause. However, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Sesko has opted to sign a new contract with RB Leipzig instead.
This decision is a setback for Chelsea, who need a new center-forward after relying heavily on Nicolas Jackson last season. Despite being only 22 and in his first season in England, the Senegalese international made 44 appearances.
Chelsea’s Alternative to Sesko
Although Chelsea missed out on Sesko, they have another target in mind. Sesko had a solid first season in the Bundesliga, scoring 14 goals in 31 games, with seven of those goals coming consecutively in his last seven matches.
Girona’s Artem Dovbyk had an impressive season as well, and Chelsea is now looking at him as an alternative to Sesko. According to GiveMeSport, the Blues are keen to sign Dovbyk.
Dovbyk scored 25 goals in 41 matches for Girona during the 2023/24 campaign. Despite his successful season, signing Dovbyk could be risky for Chelsea. The 26-year-old has spent most of his career in Ukraine and has only recently shown impressive numbers in a top European league.
Weighing the Risks
While Dovbyk performed well last season, it was his first notable achievement in a top league. If Chelsea can secure him for a reasonable fee, he might be worth the gamble if other proven strikers are not available. However, investing heavily in the Ukrainian forward could be risky.
Chelsea needs to strengthen their squad this transfer window, as placing too much pressure on Jackson in his debut season was unfair. Bringing in a new striker is essential to ensure the team has enough firepower for the upcoming season.
