Mykhaylo Mudryk’s signing at Chelsea is shaping up to be one of the most disappointing transfers in recent Premier League history. Todd Boehly splashed a staggering £89 million on the Ukrainian forward over a year ago, but his performance has been far from impressive. Since joining, Mudryk has played 58 matches for the Blues, netting only seven goals and providing four assists—numbers that fall short of expectations.
A Ray of Hope for Mudryk
However, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon for Mudryk. One potential new signing could help unlock his true potential.
Chelsea’s Hunt for a New Left-Back
According to a report from GIVEMESPORT, Chelsea are targeting Premier League standout Milos Kerkez to replace either Marc Cucurella or Ben Chilwell. The Hungarian left-back is considered a ‘priority target’ for Chelsea as they aim to strengthen their left-back position this summer. Despite Bournemouth’s reluctance to sell him cheaply, demanding a hefty fee for their 2023 summer acquisition, the positive news for Chelsea is that Kerkez is reportedly ‘keen on a move’ to Stamford Bridge, seeing it as a step forward in his career.
How Kerkez Could Transform Mudryk

At just 20 years old, Kerkez has adapted impressively to the Premier League. In his first season in England, the Hungary international made 28 league appearances, starting 22 of those matches, for a Bournemouth side that conceded an average of 1.8 goals per game. His primary role was to provide defensive stability, reflecting the team’s average possession of just 44.1%.
At Chelsea, however, Kerkez would have the opportunity to thrive and potentially elevate Mudryk’s game. While Kerkez’s stats may not be extraordinary at first glance, context is crucial. Bournemouth’s playing style has restrained him, but by nature, he’s a dynamic full-back. His single assist last season and modest in-possession stats don’t reflect his true capabilities, which were more evident during his time at AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Europa Conference League. Football scout Jacek Kulig even described him as “magnificent” during his stint at the Dutch club.
Kerkez excels in providing attacking support, whether through overlapping or underlapping runs. This approach could significantly benefit Mudryk, creating space for the winger to exploit and allowing him to showcase his skills more effectively. Currently, Mudryk often finds himself isolated on the pitch.
Kerkez’s ability to quickly progress the ball through passing or carrying, combined with his pace alongside Mudryk, would make them a formidable duo on counterattacks. The Hungarian’s experience playing higher up the field for his national team, where he will operate as a wing-back at the European Championships, further demonstrates his capacity to take on offensive duties.
A Promising Partnership
Overall, both Kerkez and Mudryk have yet to fully display their potential in the Premier League. However, together, they could form a partnership that could dominate the league for years to come.
