Chelsea Agree to pay off £200k-a-week wages and terminate the contract
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Ross Barkley left Chelsea by mutual agreement and will now be a free agent, according to Chelsea. The 28-year-deal old’s was scheduled to terminate at the conclusion of the 2022–2023 campaign.
The midfielder joined Chelsea in January 2018 and made 100 appearances for the club in all competitions. His last competitive encounter was against Watford in the season finale of the previous year. On that occasion, his header gave the Blues three points to end a season in which he made 14 appearances.
After being denied a transfer away from the club last summer, Barkley found it difficult to get a consistent chance under Thomas Tuchel. The 33-cap England midfielder spent 2020–21 on loan with Aston Villa, scoring three goals in 24 Premier League games, although he failed to make an impact.
The former Everton star participated in Chelsea’s preseason tour of the United States but eventually did not get a number and was not selected for Tuchel’s starting lineup. Since the beginning of the season, Barkley has spent time working out with the development team.
Under Maurizio Sarri, when Chelsea won the Europa League, Barkley perhaps had his best run of success while wearing a Chelsea jersey. The England international participated in the triumph against Arsenal in the tournament’s final as well as the shootout victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the tournament’s semifinal.
The midfielder’s exit looks to be a realisation by the Blues of their inability to offload Barkley before to the expiration of his contract, with the choice taken to part ways with a player who would not have an influence on first-team ambitions. Chelsea has often extended player contracts while sending players out on loan in the past, even if it seemed that they had little future with the first team. This latest decision indicates that Todd Boehly and company have changed their strategy.
“We would like to thank Ross for his contribution to Chelsea and wish him well for the remainder of his career,” Chelsea stated in a statement.
