As anticipated at the start of the season, Chelsea’s bloated squad has made it challenging for every player to secure regular minutes. With intense competition for places under manager Enzo Maresca, frustrations among players are beginning to surface.
Christopher Nkunku’s Discontent
Christopher Nkunku, a high-profile summer signing, is reportedly unhappy with his lack of Premier League playing time. While he has featured in cup competitions, the forward’s limited role in the league raises questions about his integration into Maresca’s plans.
Thursday’s European clash against Heidenheim offers an opportunity for fringe players like Nkunku to impress, but the ongoing rotation may not fully alleviate dissatisfaction among sidelined talents.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s Chelsea Struggles
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who followed Maresca from Leicester City to Stamford Bridge, is another player enduring a challenging season. Despite his quality and versatility, the English midfielder is yet to start a Premier League game, finding himself behind Moisés Caicedo and Romeo Lavia in the midfield hierarchy.
Journalist Graeme Bailey has even speculated that Dewsbury-Hall may be sold after just one season, citing Chelsea’s depth in midfield as a key factor. Speaking to The Chelsea Chronicle, Bailey said:
“Maresca knew about him and knew he was a quality player. It was a very strange deal. I don’t think he’s going to be at Chelsea at the start of next season. It is what it is. He’s not the only one it will happen to. Chelsea are well set in that department.”
Maresca’s Comments on Dewsbury-Hall and Enzo Fernández
Despite Dewsbury-Hall’s limited opportunities, Maresca has pointed to him as an example for Enzo Fernández to emulate. The Chelsea manager praised Fernández’s performance in a recent victory over Leicester, highlighting his goal as an example of what attacking midfielders need to do.
Maresca explained:
“I’m trying to convince Enzo [to play] in the same way as I did last year with Ndidi and Kiernan, that attacking midfielders need to arrive in the box. The reason why he scored today was because he was inside the box.”
Dewsbury-Hall’s success at Leicester last season, where he scored 12 goals in the Championship, underlines his potential as an attacking threat—a quality Maresca is keen to develop in Fernández.
Looking Ahead
While Dewsbury-Hall has managed to score in the Conference League this season, his lack of involvement in Chelsea’s Premier League fixtures suggests his long-term future at the club is uncertain. The situation mirrors broader challenges within Chelsea’s squad, as the club continues to balance its vast resources with the need to keep players satisfied and effective.
As Chelsea navigate these dynamics, Maresca’s ability to rotate and motivate his players will be critical to maintaining harmony in a squad bursting with talent yet limited in opportunities.
