Petr Cech was a member of the Chelsea old guard, which included players like John Terry, Frank Lampard, and Ashley Cole.
Cech played for Chelsea for 11 years and made 494 appearances.
Chelsea was captained by the former Czech Republic international 33 times. Despite admitting that it was an honor, Cech acknowledges that the role had its limitations for a goalie.
“As a captain, you always have to communicate to the referees,” Cech wrote in his piece for the official club website. I’d like to talk with the referee, but I’m 80 yards away if it happens in the opponent box!
“I used to assign a teammate and tell the ref that if there was an issue 80 yards away, talk to this guy.”
“It was an honor to be captain for the game, but it didn’t make much sense from a goalie standpoint.” It was not really realistic for me.”
