Reece James was covered by Cesar Azpilicueta and Ruben Loftus-Cheek at Chelsea last season, but the former’s likely departure amid ties to Barcelona may have affected the team’s transfer plans.
According to reports, Inter must also raise money this summer as talks with Paris Saint-Germain over a prospective transfer for Milan Skriniar halted over their price.
The Evening Standard had reported that Inter was more willing to sell Dumfries than Skriniar.
Simon Johnson, Ornstein’s coworker at The Athletic, said via Twitter that Thomas Tuchel is looking for a player who can back up and compete against James while also filling in at the right center back when necessary.
Dumfries spent much of last season as a right wing back in Inter’s 3-5-2 system, so if he joins Chelsea, he ought to have little trouble adjusting to Tuchel’s 3-4-2-1 setup.
The article did not indicate Inter’s asking fee, although the 26-year-old joined the Italian club last year after leaving PSV Eindhoven for £12.5.
The international from the Netherlands scored five goals and sent out four assists in Serie A last season while under contract with Inter until 2025.
