Chelsea’s injury woes this season have been relatively manageable compared to recent years, thanks in part to a robust squad depth allowing rotation and reducing the burden on the first XI. However, as the season hits its peak, the situation is becoming more challenging.
During Friday’s press conference, Enzo Maresca highlighted several injury concerns affecting the squad.
Current Injury Concerns
Medium- to long-term absentees Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile remain sidelined. Additionally, key players such as Enzo Fernandez, Romeo Lavia, Cole Palmer, and Levi Colwill missed training sessions last week and were considered doubtful for the Wolves game.
While Palmer managed to feature on Monday, he was only operating at around 50% fitness. The remaining players were unavailable, leaving Chelsea short-handed. Despite this, the team secured a crucial win against Wolves. However, replicating that success against Manchester City with a similarly weakened squad will be a tall order.
Insider Insight: Mixed Injury News
Ahead of Maresca’s next press conference, insider Matt Law provided some updates via the London Is Blue podcast. Here’s what he shared:
- Levi Colwill: His absence against Wolves appeared precautionary. The team is optimistic he could return for the City clash.
- Enzo Fernandez: It’s “touch and go” for him to make the lineup against City. If he misses out, he’s expected to return shortly after.
- Romeo Lavia: Unfortunately, he’s set to remain out for several weeks.
What It Means for Chelsea
While Colwill’s potential return offers hope, Chelsea’s midfield could face significant challenges without a fully fit Enzo Fernandez and the continued absence of Lavia. This leaves the team in a precarious position ahead of a critical match against the reigning Premier League champions.
