Despite Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat against Liverpool, there were several bright sparks on the pitch for the Blues. A few standout performances made the loss sting a little less for fans. Reece James, for instance, shook off any hint of rust, despite it being his first game of the season. Romeo Lavia, too, looked composed, confidently pulling the strings in midfield for Maresca’s team.
But it was Nicolas Jackson who grabbed the spotlight. Scoring Chelsea’s sole goal, his fifth of the season, Jackson’s showing was nothing short of impressive. His improvement has not gone unnoticed either. Pat Nevin, a former Chelsea player and respected pundit, recently pointed out Jackson’s growing confidence in a blue shirt, marking an impressive start to the campaign for the 23-year-old.
Nicolas Jackson Shining Under the Lights
While Jackson couldn’t secure a win at Anfield, his individual performance still caught the eye of many, including former Everton midfielder Leon Osman. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Osman lauded the Senegalese striker, describing him as a “quality” forward. According to Osman, Jackson’s positioning and timing have always been sharp—though he did note that the youngster had been caught offside more than a few times—but what stands out now is Jackson’s improvement in his finishing.
Osman wasn’t alone in his praise. ESPN pundit Shaka Hislop also chimed in, expressing his surprise at how well Jackson has adapted to Maresca’s system, considering this is still his first season in the Premier League.
Stepping Up in the Big Matches
One thing that’s becoming more apparent is Jackson’s ability to rise to the occasion in big games. Even though Chelsea didn’t leave Anfield with points, Jackson’s goal against a top-tier side adds another feather to his cap. Last season, the Senegalese forward, signed from Villarreal for £32 million, showed flashes of this ability, netting four goals against Tottenham Hotspur and finding the back of the net against Manchester City.
This season, he’s added Liverpool to his list of conquests and will soon get another opportunity to shine when Chelsea face Manchester United next month. But before that, the Blues have a tough fixture against Newcastle United, a game that could further test Jackson’s form. Given his current momentum, though, it’s not far-fetched to think he could add to his goal tally.
Aiming High
Although his recent performances for Senegal during the international break didn’t quite impress, Jackson’s focus seems firmly on his club form. At the rate he’s going, 20 league goals by the end of the season looks like a realistic target for the 23-year-old. All eyes are now on him to see if he can maintain this level and keep delivering for Chelsea, game after game.
