Tottenham and Chelsea have joined Manchester City in the fight for Brighton left-back Marc Cucurella, who is valued at £30 million. Following his £15 million move from Getafe after the Olympic Games in Tokyo last summer, the curly-haired Spaniard has been a revelation for the Seagulls this season.
Cucurella’s meteoric ascent has come as no surprise to Brighton scouts, who have been aware of his talent since his Barcelona days.
Now his previous team is kicking themselves for sending the 23-year-old, who just won Brighton’s Player of the Year award, to Getafe after a sensational first season in England.
Manchester City is reportedly planning a £30 million bid for the defender, but it appears they are not the only ones interested.
Spurs and Chelsea, according to Spanish writer Albert Roge, are also keeping an eye on his progress.
Chelsea have been interested in Cucurella since his days at Getafe, and came close to signing him last summer.
Thomas Tuchel admires his agility and enthusiasm on the left wing, something Chelsea have sorely missed since Ben Chilwell suffered an ACL injury last November.
Spurs, on the other hand, might make a transfer as Antonio Conte wants to improve his team.
With Tottenham on set to finish fourth, ahead of Arsenal, the Italian is hoping to be strongly backed in the transfer market this summer.
Ryan Sessegnon has been impressive at left-wing-back in recent weeks, but Tottenham will aim to add further competition to the position.
City, on the other hand, have been short on left-backs since losing Benjamin Mendy earlier this season.
Joao Cancelo has performed brilliantly in his absence, while Oleksandr Zinchenko has been given more regular playing time.
But left-back is an area where City wants to strengthen this summer, and Cucurella, who recently scored and played a key role in City’s 4-0 win against Manchester United, fits the description.
Despite the potential for a big profit, Brighton are unlikely to accept proposals in the area of £30 million.
After holding out for £50 million for Ben White in prior transfer windows, the Seagulls have shown to be tough negotiators.
In January, Brighton turned down a bid of around £30 million from Aston Villa for Yves Bissouma.
Graham Potter and the Amex board of directors are under no obligation to sell Cucurella, therefore they see no need to cave in.
