After being introduced as a Real Madrid player yesterday, Antonio Rudiger is no longer a Chelsea player, but how did we get here, and how did we wind up losing one of Europe’s greatest defenders on a free transfer?
Carlo Ancelotti, according to Rudiger, was the one who swung it at his introduction at the Bernabeu yesterday.
According to Rudi, he was indecisive until Ancelotti stepped in, as evidenced by his statements from the Guardian:
“I approached them for the first time — not really me, but my agent – in September of last year. In April, I had a straight conversation with Ancelotti for the second time. That was the most crucial point. It was then that I made the choice to join Mr. Ancelotti’s team.”
We hope Rudiger is aware that Real Madrid, like Chelsea, has a habit of sacking their manager on a regular basis. As recently as this season, Ancelotti was under a lot of criticism despite winning the league and the Champions League.
They should be in course to challenge for major championships again this year with Rudiger in their back line, and Ancelotti can relax a little easier.
