Despite the overall disappointment in yesterday’s game, one shining beacon was the performance of Cole Palmer. Mauricio Pochettino clearly shared this sentiment and took the opportunity to speak at length about the attacking midfielder during the post-match press conference:
“He’s showing a great performance, character, and personality. You know, it’s always about the team, and when you don’t win. For sure he is disappointed, and we are all disappointed,” Pochettino remarked, as reported by Football.London.
“We are happy with the way he arrived. He joined in the last moments of the transfer window, but he’s playing like he’s been here for 10 years, displaying his character and personality.”
Pochettino went on to address the expectations that come with signing a new player, emphasizing that you can only truly understand their potential once they are part of the team. He noted that from the very beginning of Palmer’s training, his talent was evident, but it takes time for the entire team to gel and perform at their best.
In the defeat, Palmer’s performance was faultless. The missed chance, perfectly set up by the former Manchester City midfielder, and subsequently fired directly at the goalkeeper by Marc Cucurella, is a source of frustration for Chelsea fans and will linger in their memories for some time.
The hope is that with perseverance and the addition of players who can convert the opportunities Palmer creates, Chelsea’s fortunes will improve. Until then, it seems there may be more challenging moments ahead.
