On Wednesday morning, the UK Government authorized the sale of Chelsea Football Club to the Todd Boehly and Clearlake consortium after getting legal guarantees that the £4.24 billion transactions will not benefit Roman Abramovich, who was sanctioned in March.
With the Premier League’s approval of the new owners confirmed on Tuesday evening, all that’s needed now is for the team to make an official announcement and the club store to reopen if Todd can locate the keys.
Given the effect of the penalties since March, a lot of business and movement is expected to happen swiftly, as the new leadership aims to make a good first impression and get Chelsea back on track by the start of next season.
With that in mind, let’s try to forecast three things that will undoubtedly happen at Stamford Bridge in the aftermath of the news that Chelsea fans have been waiting for several weeks. Life at Fulham Road is about to get very intriguing, with transfers, the club’s structure, contracts, present players, and supporter engagement all to be settled.
1. Kounde will be the Boehly era’s first signing.
Chelsea’s sale has been approved by the UK government.
Due to frequent sightings of the French defender in London and the fact that discussions with Sevilla were still ongoing last summer, it is now assumed that Jules Kounde will join Chelsea in 2022.
Football.london is aware. Chelsea is still interested in signing the 23-year-old midfielder, who has been on their radar for some years. With club captain Cesar Azpilicueta still linked with Barcelona, Kounde’s arrival would help relieve some of the pressure on Thomas Tuchel to rebuild his defence after the departures of both Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.
Kounde, who plays on the right side of defense and has traits that seem to fit Tuchel’s criteria, might be the first of several clever signings in a crucial summer window.
2. Make sponsorship arrangements
It appears that the new owners will face a difficult challenge in getting rid of one jersey sponsor and negotiating a new one in time for next season’s uniform. However, since Three announced their intention to withdraw their partnership with Chelsea on the day Abramovich was sanctioned in March, fans’ attitudes against the mobile business have been overwhelmingly hostile.
The switch from Fly Emirates to Samsung took only two seasons when Abramovich purchased Chelsea in 2003. With Three’s current contract slated to expire in 2023, a new pact would be a good way to signify a new direction.
3. Mason Mount and Reece James were given new contracts.
Even before Raine Group declared Boehly’s consortium as the preferred bidder, Mason Mount and Reece James were said to be in line for new contracts.
Securing the futures of two homegrown jewels, perhaps the club’s most valued and consistent players since 2019, would be a big statement of their importance in Chelsea’s present and future. And, given their spectacular ascent, it’s only natural that they become among of the team’s biggest earners, with rumours circulating that Mount’s weekly income may be doubled with a new contract once the takeover is finally completed.
