“Was a bit tired and far away from his best condition” – Mauricio Pochettino admits 23-year-old Chelsea player was struggling when playing
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that Reece James was feeling the effects towards the end of their last game, particularly when he received his second yellow card against Newcastle. In his pre-match press conference, Pochettino acknowledged that James, who apologized to Chelsea supporters for his role in the heavy defeat, was struggling during the latter part of the match.
Despite James’ return from injury, Pochettino expressed disappointment in the club captain’s performance, emphasizing that he is still working to regain his peak condition. The suspension of James and the unavailability of Malo Gusto due to injury present a challenge for the manager in deciding who will fill the right-back position in the upcoming game against Brighton.
Adding to the dilemma, Marc Cucurella, who has occasionally played in that position this season, is also suspended and cannot face his former side. Pochettino hinted that James is still not fully capable of completing 90 minutes after his return from injury, citing fatigue as a factor in his second yellow card.
Pochettino stated, “Of course, it’s part of the process. Too many times he was injured, but he was a bit tired when he got the second yellow card.” Despite James realizing that he is currently away from his best condition, Pochettino emphasized the player’s regret over the situation, acknowledging that it was a tough moment for both him and the team.
With James and Gusto unavailable, Pochettino may turn to Axel Disasi, who could be deployed out of position on the right side of a back four. The upcoming challenge against Brighton, featuring Kaoru Mitoma, poses a significant test for any defender, making the selection of the right-back position crucial for Chelsea.
