In a lighthearted exchange, Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino jokingly referred to Christopher Nkunku as a “liar” after a recent conversation about the player’s fitness. Despite the anticipation surrounding Nkunku’s potential impact on the team, the £52 million attacker is yet to make his competitive debut for Chelsea due to injury.
There’s a buzz suggesting that Nkunku’s return is on the horizon. Pochettino shared an update in a press conference, revealing that Nkunku expressed his desire to be ready for the match against Newcastle United on November 25, the first game post-international break. However, Pochettino, in a playful manner, seemed to disagree with Nkunku on the return date, stating, “I asked him yesterday, and he said ‘Hmm,’ and I said, ‘You are a liar.’ It’s close. He’s doing really, really well. We are so happy with him in the way he’s doing his recovery, very professional.”
Nkunku’s introduction to the Chelsea lineup is highly anticipated, considering his impressive track record at RB Leipzig in Germany, where he scored 70 goals and provided 56 assists in 172 games. While there might be an adjustment period for the French forward in a new club and country, expectations are high for him to make a significant impact at Stamford Bridge.
Recent reports suggest that Chelsea is hopeful Nkunku could be ready to start a game by the time the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Newcastle arrives on December 19. The team has a series of Premier League fixtures before then, starting with a game against Manchester City this Sunday. Chelsea’s forward line has shown improvement in goal-scoring, but Nkunku is seen by many as the potential upgrade that could address the team’s goal-scoring challenges and elevate them to a higher level.
