Poch explain why his current situation is ‘different’ from when Thomas Tuchel became Chelsea manager
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Mauricio Pochettino has highlighted the contrasting circumstances of his appointment and Thomas Tuchel’s at Chelsea. Tuchel, who took the helm as Chelsea’s manager in January 2021, successfully guided the team to victory in the 2020–21 Champions League. However, he was unexpectedly dismissed by new owner Todd Boehly, resulting in a shift in the club’s strategies and principles.
Boehly, the new owner, appeared to prioritize allowing the manager more time in the current season, a departure from the pressure-induced decision-making in the previous campaign due to a series of poor results. Pochettino’s appointment seemed to be a deliberate choice by the owners, demonstrating their intent to learn from past missteps in West London.
The Argentine manager emphasized that the circumstances of their appointments were different from the outset. Due to Roman Abramovich’s history of swift managerial changes in response to unsatisfactory results, Chelsea rarely engaged in long-term projects under a single coach. Managers at Chelsea were often granted very little time to instill a winning mindset and were expected to deliver immediate success or face dismissal.
Tuchel performed admirably upon his arrival, rescuing the team during Frank Lampard’s challenging tenure. Despite the club’s structural stability and a promising blend of experience and youth, the German manager’s remarkable efforts steered Chelsea to Champions League triumph.
While Pochettino enjoys the support of the board under Boehly and aims to establish his own coaching philosophy, there exists a notable distinction between their circumstances. The board faces pressure due to the fans’ impatience, underscoring the need for Pochettino to swiftly alter the situation.
The recent 1-0 loss against Aston Villa has not improved Pochettino’s standing, but the essence of a long-term project implies a perspective spanning months and seasons. Patience is imperative for Pochettino’s approach to manifest its desired effect, but at present, visible improvements are essential to win the fans’ support for the manager.
