Chelsea’s left-back, Ian Maatsen, has made a decisive choice to remain at the club, turning down an opportunity to join Burnley. This decision comes as Chelsea accepted an arrangement that would have seen Maatsen join Burnley on loan, with an obligation for Burnley to purchase him for a fee of £13.5 million, including add-ons.
The Blues’ willingness to part with Maatsen came in the wake of the collapse of Marc Cucurella’s proposed move to Manchester United, which left Chelsea with an abundance of left-back options.
Maatsen had spent the previous season on loan at Turf Moor and had left a positive impression. He started 38 Championship games and played a pivotal role in helping the team finish at the top of the league, securing promotion.
Following his return to Chelsea, Maatsen had a promising pre-season and made two substitute appearances in the Premier League. He also started in Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup.
Notably, Borussia Dortmund and West Ham had expressed interest in signing Maatsen. It is understood that Mauricio Pochettino, the manager of Paris Saint-Germain, preferred Maatsen over Cucurella at this point.
Chelsea has been exceptionally active in the transfer market during this window, with a flurry of arrivals and departures. The latest news indicates that Cole Palmer has completed the first part of his medical examination with Chelsea and is set to sign a seven-year contract after a £45 million fee was agreed upon. Additionally, Chelsea has secured notable acquisitions, including Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Christopher Nkunku, Axel Disasi, and Nicolas Jackson.
