Alan Shearer, a Newcastle icon, chastised Tuchel for not starting Timo Werner, who he expected to cause problems for Liverpool’s defense.
“No shocks to me in the Liverool team, that’s very much as predicted,” he told the BBC.
“Hartz is injured with Chelsea. But, given Werner’s pace and Liverpool’s high line, I’m shocked he’s not in the starting lineup.
“I know he gets offside a lot, but being behind would have been a major threat to him.”
Tuchel has now disclosed why Werner was absent: the German international was experiencing discomfort in his hamstring during warm-up.
“Timo felt uncomfortable during the warm-up and declared he couldn’t play,” Tuchel revealed after the game.
