According to Nizaar Kinsella of the Evening Standard, Ben Chilwell has emerged as one of the top performers in Mauricio Pochettino’s Gacon test during Chelsea’s preseason training at Cobham.
The Gacon test, developed by French fitness coach Georges Gacon and adopted by Pochettino, is a fitness assessment that aims to improve endurance. It involves running for 45 seconds and then resting for 15 seconds, with the distance covered increasing each time. Chilwell’s impressive performance in the test indicates that he has maintained excellent fitness over the summer.
Chilwell’s fitness is a positive sign for Chelsea, especially considering that he missed several Premier League games due to injury last season. Pochettino reportedly sees Chilwell as the ideal left-back for his preferred system and wants the 26-year-old to play a key role at Stamford Bridge in the upcoming season.
The combination of Chilwell and Reece James, another talented full-back, has the potential to make them the best duo in the Premier League. However, injuries have hindered their ability to establish themselves consistently. Chelsea will hope to have both players available on a regular basis next season, as they greatly enhance the team when fit.
