Instead, they are allowing him to leave on a free transfer as a gesture of respect for his contributions to the club. Azpilicueta has been with Chelsea since 2012, making 508 appearances and winning numerous trophies during his tenure.
The 33-year-old’s current contract expires in 12 months, which means Chelsea would not have received a significant transfer fee for him anyway. By letting him go on a free transfer, Chelsea will be able to remove his £150,000-a-week wages from the salary bill, freeing up funds for manager Mauricio Pochettino to utilize on new signings.
The departure of Azpilicueta may be a cause for concern for some Chelsea fans, as it means Pochettino loses another experienced player. The manager has already seen several established stars leave the club, which leaves him with a relatively young squad. The remaining experienced players such as Thiago Silva and Raheem Sterling will need to step up and provide leadership as Chelsea aims to recover from a tumultuous 2022/23 season.
