Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has conveyed to Scott McTominay that he is deemed surplus to requirements at the club and is free to depart from Old Trafford.

Initially joining the academy as a striker, McTominay has evolved into a versatile midfielder capable of covering the entire length of the pitch.
Although the 26-year-old enjoyed regular starts under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he has encountered increased competition for playing time under the tenure of Ten Hag. McTominay still managed to make 39 appearances across all competitions last season, but he now finds himself lower in the pecking order compared to players such as Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, and Bruno Fernandes.
Ten Hag had initially considered selling one midfielder during the summer transfer window, with Fred being the prime candidate given his age of 29 and the fact that he has only one year remaining on his contract. However, Fulham has balked at the asking price set by Manchester United for the Brazilian, and TalkSPORT reports that McTominay has been given the green light to seek opportunities elsewhere.
Newcastle has long held an interest in McTomiany, although it remains to be seen whether Manchester United would entertain the idea of selling him to a direct competitor who finished just below them in the previous season.
David Moyes, who hails from the same country as McTominay, is an admirer of the player, and there is a possibility that Manchester United might consider including McTominay as part of a player-plus-cash deal for Declan Rice.
However, Arsenal currently appears to be the frontrunner in the race to secure the services of the talented England international.
